Masterclass: Hot and Cold, Colour and Surface – Neil Edwards
Course Outline
Working as a team, combine hot and coldworking glass techniques to create colourful patterning and surface texture in glass. Create unique components to be used by yourself and others, then assemble components into a final piece. Glassblowing, colour layering, engraving, sandblasting, cutting and grinding processes will be used.
Day 1. In the morning, an introduction to the processes you will use is followed by a discussion with examples of other artists’ work and a component making demonstration. In the afternoon you will work in the hot shop as a group to create coloured components ready for classmates to coldwork the following day.
Day 2. Neil will demonstrate simple mark-making techniques including engraving, masking and sandblasting, as well as cutting and grinding using a flatbed and lathe. The group will discuss working collaboratively as a way of coming up with new ideas. Using supplied components and components made by classmates, you will put mark-making into practice. Designs will change and respond to how the forms take shape throughout the making process. In the afternoon follow a demonstration of putting components together in preparation for next day and consider using hot torch and glue bits.
Day 3. Work with the team to realise ideas. Components will be pre-heated, and students will take it in turns to put their own final pieces together.
