Masterclass: Venetian Cane Techniques with Dave Barry
Course Outline
This intensive four-day class is designed to provide students with the fundamentals of making Venetian style vessels using cane. On the first day, through demos and hands on practice, students will pull lengths of cane to chop and roll up into a long vessel which will be used to create a set of small 'cups' or 'supio'. These are then reheated to form the blown design of your chosen Venetian vessel. Class participants will also be provided with a stock of cane in the beginning, which will be used to practice rolling up and also a few ready-made supios. In addition to exploring the design of functional wares, students will learn production techniques and teamwork so that multiple objects can be made with greater efficiency. Daily demonstrations will supplement supervised practice sessions so that students can progress as quickly as possible in an immersive, intensive studio environment. Time permitting, more complex cane patterns and processes will be demonstrated.
This class is only suitable for students who already have a basic grasp of traditional Venetian glassblowing processes, and want to expand their technical vocabulary. If you are unsure of your skill level, please contact us.
