Course Outline

Turn geometric shapes into sculptural glass. In this workshop, Georgia will introduce a more sculptural slant to her modular casting techniques course. Working with high relief positive forms or “outies”, you will produce a kit of modular geometric silicone components which can be used to create relief panels and three-dimensional pieces.

This class will begin at the more usual end point of her previous classes – with a plaster investment mould made by Georgia in advance. You will use this to explore how different glass colours and formats – powders, scrap sheet and billet – can be used to change the visual impact of your final cast forms. These pre-cast moulds will be filled and fired on day one, so that you can demould your first piece by the end of the course.

Next, start to develop your own modular kit using 3D-printed and collaged mount-board models to cast a small family of silicone components, each with an integrated bolt. Learn how to make your own bases – in cardboard and silicone – extending the possibilities for using your kit after the course. By the end of four full days, we’ll be back at the beginning – with at least one more investment mould ready for firing.

  • All tools and materials are provided
  • Casts will be kept relatively small, so we can experiment more (and allow time for annealing the glass). The aim is to fall in love with the process of casting and discover how it can feed and enrich your designs.
  • Suitable for all levels including students who have previously attended her classes.

Georgia Redpath

Georgia Redpath`s work draws on the geometry underpinning structure, using repeating modular elements to produce pieces of complexity and scale. Georgia completed a BA in Contemporary Decorative Crafts in 2005, and then relocated to Stourbridge in the West Midlands – one of the major UK centres for glass. She currently has a studio at the Ruskin Glass Centre.

Geometry is the source of inspiration for everything she makes, using the casting processes to create work inspired by the patterns & geometry of life. Georgia developed her 'Collaglass' technique in response to this. It involves cast glass made from an original collage of cardboard (and occasionally a few other things) to create deep relief, the card acting as printing plates, leaving their crisp impression in a block of glass.'Geometry is at the heart of all pattern - and, as humans, we are programmed to recognise and respond to pattern. So geometry is a language spoken across borders: universally used and implicitly understood without us making any effort, or even being aware'.
