Explore the traditional techniques used to make classical English stemware with master glassblower Dave Barry. Over three intensive days, you will develop the timing, heat control and teamwork needed to create a complete drinking glass. You will learn how to blow and shape the bowl, drop on the stem and foot, and open out the foot using the traditional English method.

You will take turns working as both maker and assistant, learning how to coordinate each stage of the process and keep the glass at the right temperature. The first two days will focus on practice, repetition and building confidence, so expect to make a few “woblets” along the way. By the end of the third day, the aim is to bring everything together and produce a well-balanced finished glass.

Dave will demonstrate a range of historical English drinking glasses and techniques, including Georgian-style forms, air-twist stems and baluster stems. Working with traditional wooden footboards and a minimal set of tools, you will gain a practical understanding of this increasingly rare method of glassmaking.

This is an enjoyable, fast-paced workshop designed for glassblowers who already have a sound foundation in glassblowing. It is suitable both for those making stemware for the first time and for more experienced makers who want to improve their technique, consistency and efficiency.
