SUMMARY:Masterclass: Hot and Cold\, Colour and Surface - Neil Edwards
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column]Course Outline\n	\n \n Working as a team\, combine hot and coldworking glass techniques to create colourful patterning and surface texture in glass.  Create unique components to be used by yourself and others\,  then assemble components into a final piece.  Glassblowing\, colour layering\, engraving\, sandblasting\, cutting and grinding processes will be used. \nDay 1. In the morning\, an introduction to the processes you will use is followed by a discussion with examples of other artists’ work and a component making demonstration. In the afternoon you will work in the hot shop as a group to create coloured components ready for classmates to coldwork the following day. \nDay 2. Neil will demonstrate simple mark-making techniques including engraving\, masking and sandblasting\, as well as cutting and grinding using a flatbed and lathe. The group will discuss working collaboratively as a way of coming up with new ideas. Using supplied components and components made by classmates\, you will put mark-making into practice. Designs will change and respond to how the forms take shape throughout the making process. In the afternoon follow a demonstration of putting components together in preparation for next day and consider using hot torch and glue bits. \nDay 3. Work with the team to realise ideas. Components will be pre-heated\, and students will take it in turns to put their own final pieces together. \n\n \n	\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n	\nNeil Edwards\n	\n \n Neil Edwards has worked as a glassblower at Bristol Blue Glass and Cumbria Crystal in the UK.  He also spent three years working in Taiwan\, teaching and exhibiting extensively and in the Maldives at Soneva Fushi. He graduated with an MA in Glass from the University of Sunderland.\nRecent work has been focused on using the blown glass form to fuse Western and Eastern concepts in design and meaning. \nwww.neiledwardsglass.com \n\n \n	\nFacebookInstagram\n[/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Masterclass: Advanced Pattern Making in Glass - Ian Chadwick
DESCRIPTION:"Wow\, what a great course! Thank you Glass Hub\, Ian\, and all of you for being such a supportive group." Janet - Ian Chadwick MasterclassCourse Outline\n	\n \n Master advanced pattern making in fused glass on this intensive five-day workshop with renowned glass artist Ian Chadwick. Using pre-formed Bullseye glass stringer sheets\, expand your knowledge and experience of both kiln-forming and cold-working techniques\, to produce intricate\, mandala-like patterns using symmetry and geometry. \nIan will guide you through the process of creating Bullseye glass stringer sheets which\, once fired\, will be deconstructed and reassembled. Learn how the arrangement of tone and colour can enhance the optical properties of the pattern design and how to lay out the pattern using the principles of four-fold and eight-fold symmetry. Using these concepts and techniques\, design and create a glass tile or dish with a pattern uniquely yours. At the end of the week Ian will introduce you to his latest hand cold-working techniques for finishing fired glass work. \nEmbark on a fascinating journey of symmetry\, geometry\, and creativity in glasswork design. \nParticipants should ideally be of an intermediate level as accurate hand cutting of glass is fundamental to this class\, although techniques to improve your cutting\, and ultimately your confidence\, will be covered. \n\n \n	\nCourse Tutor - Ian Chadwick\n	\n \n \n \n \n	\n\n	\n \n website \n\n \n	\n\n	\n \n Ian Chadwick has a background in sculpture and stained-glass window design\, disciplines which he applies to his constantly evolving range of kiln-formed glass art. Glass as a medium is inspirational due to its abilities to transform light. The glass Ian produces is all created within a kiln. The kiln-forming technique of working glass involves constructing and deconstructing of glass elements to produce the end result. It is a deliberate\, laborious technique where the glass is worked in its cold state and the end product is achieved by applying precision and patience. \nIan’s current range of work is deeply concerned with pattern building. Small pieces of coloured glass are arranged and melted in a kiln to produce a sheet of kaleidoscopic\, coloured glass which is then formed to the desired shape. This work embodies Ian’s interest in the esoteric art of sacred geometry\, commonly found in the rose windows of cathedrals and the mandalas of eastern religious lore. \nhttps://ianchadwickglassart.co.uk/

You will learn the fundamentals of this ancient craft and create your own glass objects using hot\, molten glass straight from the furnace. You will learn how to 'gather' and form a glass sphere (bauble)\, a paperweight and a vase. Class sizes are small so that you can have plenty of 'hands-on' time\, usually four students or less per tutor. \nOne day glassblowing is an ideal opportunity to try something you have always wanted to do\, or perhaps never thought of before. A guaranteed unique and exciting experience day\, where you will leave with a new understanding of glass and glassblowing\, as well as first-hand skills. \n\n \n	\n\nOur Glassblowing Tutors\n	\n \n The Glass Hub team tutors are professional and experienced. We run a number of furnaces\, and although we do not guarantee a particular tutor for this course you can be sure that each tutor will be highly qualified and experienced. \n\n \n	\n\n\n	\n	\nNeil Edwards\n\n	\n	\nDave Barry\n\n	\n	\nKT Yun\n\n	\n	\nAbigail Wilderspin\n\n	\n	\nAmy Casto\n\n	\n	\nSarah MorrisView All Dates

SUMMARY:Traditional Glass Painting
DESCRIPTION:"I just wanted to say what an absolutely fantastic day I had on the 12th on Kerry's glass painting  class.  Kerry explains everything so well and with infinite patience and really opened my eyes to new techniques. She is an amazing teacher and the class was brilliant." PaoloTraditional Glass PaintingCourse Outline\n	\n \n Discover the traditional skill of painting on glass using vitreous glass paints and specialised brushes. In this one day course you will paint a number of samples and a finished piece to practise a variety of lining\, shading and sgraffito techniques. The pieces will be fired overnight. \nPainted pieces from this course can be brought along and incorporated in our 2 day Leading and Glazing course. \nPlease note: due to the paint pigment containing lead this course is not suitable for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. \n\n \n	\nProfile - Kerry Collison\n	\n \n \n \n \n	\n\n	\n \n Kerry trained in stained glass at Swansea College of Art and has worked on commercial glazing projects as part of the Cathedral Studios\, Canterbury and the Architectural Glass Centre\, Swansea. \nKerry’s personal work illustrates mischief and anarchy into controlled glass material; focusing on using traditional skills to produce fun and contemporary artworks. She is intent on bringing the comic book back to its original format: the stained glass window. Her pieces have been shown in numerous exhibitions\, including the 6th John Ruskin Prize. Kerry was featured on Sky Arts: Bill Bailey’s Master Crafters in 2023. \nwww.kerrycollisonartist.co.uk \n\n \n	\nInstagramWebsite

On our 3-day glass kilnworking course you'll experiment with glass fusing\, reactive fusing\, iridescent fusing and deep fusing. We will also look at  slumping\, drop-out moulds\, pot melts and open-faced moulds - creating form and texture in cast glass. Technical instruction is given throughout\, covering kiln firing schedules and glass properties.  An intensive and fun course of kiln activity\, offering a thorough grounding in kiln basics as well as some more advanced techniques. \n\n \n	\nCourse Tutors - Helga Watkins Baker & Joanna Watson\n	\n \n \n \n \n	\n\n	\n \n Helga is co-founder and director of The Glass Hub and as well as working tirelessly backstage\, teaches warm glass courses. \nHelga originally trained in architectural stained glass\, undertook postgraduate studies in kiln techniques for glass at Central St. Martin’s College\, London\, and an MA in Glass at Wolverhampton\, specialising in kiln forming. She was chairperson of the Contemporary Glass Society from 2004-8\, and was an original founder of the Liquid Glass Centre. Her glass work is an interpretation of ideas concerning nature\, time\, and the energy of natural forces and elements\, such as air\, water\, light. She has worked in glass education for a number of years\, and in 2010 published Kiln Forming Glass an in-depth guide to kiln processes for glass. \n\n \n	\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n	\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n	\n\n	\n \n Joanna Watson makes jewellery and gifts for the home in kiln fused glass. She trained in cookery and taught for many years as a Chef/Tutor at Demuth’s renowned Cookery School in Bath. Stained Glass was her first glassy love before she discovered fusing. She sells her work through galleries\, craft shops and art fairs. She now teaches at The Glass Hub\, Wiltshire.

SUMMARY:Masterclass: Lost Wax Without Wax - Advanced Glass Casting - Antonis Koutouzis
DESCRIPTION:Course Outline\n	\n \n Explore the possibilities of the lost wax technique without the need of wax. \nIn the lost wax process\, we often deal with approximate 2-3% wax shrinkage of the model to be cast\, plus additional time for retouching seamlines and any imperfections resulting from pouring/brushing into the mother moulds. The inevitable steaming of the wax can\, furthermore\, stress and weaken refractory moulds\, especially in larger projects. \nIn this five-day advanced glass casting Masterclass\, Antonis will guide you through a complex multistep process of creating positive and negative forms in silicone to eliminate these problems\, resulting in a cleaner\, more efficient\, and more accurate realisation of almost any shape for casting. \nOver five days\, participants will: \n\nAnalyse sculptural forms and plan appropriate mould strategies\nCreate a master mould\nProduce a positive form in silicone\nDevelop multi-step silicone mould systems\nConstruct a final refractory mould ready for casting\nDiscuss casting considerations and adaptations for different forms\n\nDue to the complexity and duration of the process\, participants will not complete a fired glass piece during the masterclass. Instead\, each participant will leave with a fully resolved refractory mould\, which can be fired later in their own facilities or\, by arrangement\, at The Glass Hub. \n\n \n	\nProfile - Antonis Koutouzis\n	\n \n \n \n \n	\n\n	\n \n Antonis Koutouzis is a visual artist and glass fabricator specialising in cast glass techniques. He is Head of Casting at Berengo Studio in Murano\, Italy\, where he collaborates on projects with internationally renowned contemporary artists. He holds an MA in Glass and Ceramics from the University of Sunderland (2021) and has taught advanced glass casting masterclasses internationally. \nwww.antoniskoutouzis.com \n\n \n	\nInstagramVimeoLinkedIn

Sara & Katie - Glassblowing Experience"Really interesting\, informative and hands-on experience. Great to be able to make a keepsake and know we made it. Thank you!" Katie & Richard - Glassblowing ExperienceCourse Outline\n	\n \n This is a great glassblowing 'taster' and introduction to the magic of glass. You will gather hot molten glass straight from the furnace and shape into two objects such as a blown bauble to hang and a colourful paperweight.  Through hands-on making you will gain first-hand insight into this ancient craft that dates back thousands of years. A unique and exciting experience. \nTaster sessions (also known as Half-Day Glassblowing) are run in the morning at 10.30am or the afternoon at 2pm and last approximately two and a half hours. Two objects are made and depending on the day the objects will include a blown bauble and a paperweight. Due to time constraints we are unable to make bespoke objects on these sessions but if you are interested in this then we do offer private tuition see 'Hire and Private Tuition' for more details. \n\n \n	\nOur Glassblowing TutorsNeil EdwardsDave BarryKT YunAbigail WilderspinAmy CastoSarah MorrisView All Morning Dates View All Afternoon Dates
