Suitable for complete beginners as well as those looking to refresh or build on existing skills\, this immersive course gives you plenty of time to practise techniques\, experiment with colour and form\, and develop your own ideas. \nBegin by learning how to light and work safely with your own torch\, control the molten glass and wind it onto a mandrel. Create glass beads in a variety of shapes\, colours and designs while building a strong foundation in the essential techniques of flameworking. \nAs your confidence grows\, move beyond beads and explore sculptural techniques. Create small flowers\, animals and other miniature forms through demonstrations\, guided practice and plenty of hands-on making time. \nOn the final day\, focus on the techniques that interest you most. Develop your own designs\, refine your skills or combine colour\, pattern and sculptural forms to create more individual pieces. \nThis fun\, intensive and highly creative course offers a thorough introduction to soft-glass flameworking and the time and freedom to explore its many possibilities. By the end of the three days\, you will have developed a solid foundation of skills and created your own collection of tiny wonders. \nFlameworking glass is both an accessible and addictive technique ideally suited to beginners with an interest in creating with glass. \n\nAll materials\, tools and equipment are provided.\nEach day is split into two sessions by a break for lunch. Bring a packed lunch. Refreshments provided.\nYour glass items will need to cool overnight in a kiln and so work made on the last day can either be collected at a later time or posted on to you.\n\n\n		\n	\nTutor Profile - Sarah Morris\n	\n		\n			Sarah Morris is a glass artist and experienced tutor specialising in glassblowing and flameworking. \nAfter graduating from Plymouth College of Art in 1999 with a BA in Ceramics\, Glass and Metalwork\, Sarah visited Kitengela Glass in Kenya. The experience inspired her to pursue a career working with glass. She began her professional training as a glassblower at Bath Aqua Glass and later joined The Glass Hub\, where she teaches both glassblowing and flameworking. \nFascinated by the possibilities of working on a miniature scale\, Sarah taught herself flameworking—the process of shaping molten glass using a torch. Her work ranges from decorative beads and simple blown bowls and tumblers to sculptural torchwork inspired by organic and natural forms. \nSarah is also known for her Dinkies\, a playful collection of miniature glass sculptures originally developed for Bristol Blue Glass and now available through Exmoor Glass. Her tiny animals\, fungi and other characterful forms combine technical skill with a lifelong love of intricate\, small-scale making. \nAs one of The Glass Hub’s specialist tutors\, Sarah brings extensive making and teaching experience to her courses. You will learn the fundamentals of flameworking\, also known as lampworking\, with demonstrations and plenty of practice time\, working from your own torch. \nOur experienced tutor will guide you through the technique; introduce you to flameworking tools and equipment; the types and properties of glass; styles of flameworking; and how to keep it safe. DESCRIPTION:Course Outline\n	\n		\n			This intensive four-day class is designed to provide students with the fundamentals of making Venetian style vessels using cane. On the first day\, through demos and hands on practice\, students will pull lengths of cane to chop and roll up into a long vessel which will be used to create a set of small 'cups' or 'supio'.  These are then reheated to form the blown design of your chosen Venetian vessel. Class participants will also be provided with a stock of cane in the beginning\, which will be used to practice rolling up and also a few ready-made supios. In addition to exploring the design of functional wares\, students will learn production techniques and teamwork so that multiple objects can be made with greater efficiency. Daily demonstrations will supplement supervised practice sessions so that students can progress as quickly as possible in an immersive\, intensive studio environment. Time permitting\, more complex cane patterns and processes will be demonstrated. \nThis class is only suitable for students who already have a basic grasp of traditional Venetian glassblowing processes\, and want to expand their technical vocabulary. Barry specialises in both English and Venetian stemware and is highly skilled in the ‘Massello’ technique of hot glass sculpture.

Anthony will also cover kiln firing programs to fire your work and share his knowledge of the significance of Ghanaian ‘Kente’ cloth and Adinkra symbology in history. \n\n		\n	\nProfile - Anthony Amoaka Attah\n	\n		\n		\n			\n\n	\n\n		\n	\n\n	\n		\n			Anthony Amoako-Attah manipulates glass to look like woven fabric by screen printing and kiln-forming with glass powders. His work explores themes related to the effects of migration\, dislocation\, and personal identity using traditional Kente designs and Adinkra. \nAnthony is a PhD student in glass and ceramics at the University of Sunderland\, where he received an MA (glass) in 2016. He completed a BA in industrial art (ceramics) at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi\, Ghana. His work has been exhibited at the National Glass Centre in Sunderland\, and at Sunderland Museum\, which commissioned him to produce an artwork for their collection in 2020. Over three stimulating and fun days Opal will share with you the techniques she has developed over ten years that have evolved into this unique style. Students have loved this class and we are delighted that Opal has returned to The Glass Hub to teach it for a second time. \nAs you design\, plan and create your masterpiece\, Opal will guide you through the process from start to finish. After cutting designs from Spectrum and Bullseye sheets (using both hand-cutting and the Taurus ring saw)\, learn how to apply enamels using airbrush and other techniques to bring shading and finer detail to your design. Work is fired a minimum of one time prior to assembly and on the final day you will construct your multi-layered 3D design – Kapow! \n\n		\n	\n\n	\n		\n		\n			\n		\n	\nOpal Seabrook\n	\n		\n			Opal began her career in stained glass techniques\, but developed her skills through testing her ideas against traditionalist views\, into fusing techniques. Opal uses a broad range of traditional leaded glass craftsmanship\, merged with self-taught glass fusing techniques\, to design and create intricate and unique fused glass art. Opal’s ever-evolving style is inspired by a wide range of sources\, including tattoo\, comic\, pop art\, nature\, photography and art in its wider context\, and uses techniques such as airbrushing\, powder printing\, freehand painting\, and sgraffito prior to kiln firing\, using other materials alongside glass to ensure her creations are truly unique. \nOpal’s work is exhibited in galleries across the UK\, including the British Glass Biennale 2019 and the Contemporary Glass Society CELESTIAL BODIES exhibition 2019 (winner of the People’s Prize). \n\n		\n	\n\n	\n		\n			‘I love to create unique art that makes people smile!’

She was chairperson of the Contemporary Glass Society from 2004-8\, and was an original founder of the Liquid Glass Centre. Her glass work is an interpretation of ideas concerning nature\, time\, and the energy of natural forces and elements\, such as air\, water\, light. She has worked in glass education for a number of years\, and in 2010 published Kiln Forming Glass an in-depth guide to kiln processes for glass.

On our 3-day glass kilnworking course you'll experiment with glass fusing\, reactive fusing\, iridescent fusing and deep fusing. We will also look at  slumping\, drop-out moulds\, pot melts and open-faced moulds - creating form and texture in cast glass. Technical instruction is given throughout\, covering kiln firing schedules and glass properties.  An intensive and fun course of kiln activity\, offering a thorough grounding in kiln basics as well as some more advanced techniques. \n\n		\n	\nCourse Tutors - Helga Watkins Baker & Joanna Watson\n	\n		\n		\n			\n		\n	\n\n	\n		\n			Helga is co-founder and director of The Glass Hub and as well as working tirelessly backstage\, teaches warm glass courses. \nHelga originally trained in architectural stained glass\, undertook postgraduate studies in kiln techniques for glass at Central St. Martin’s College\, London\, and an MA in Glass at Wolverhampton\, specialising in kiln forming. She was chairperson of the Contemporary Glass Society from 2004-8\, and was an original founder of the Liquid Glass Centre. Her glass work is an interpretation of ideas concerning nature\, time\, and the energy of natural forces and elements\, such as air\, water\, light. She has worked in glass education for a number of years\, and in 2010 published Kiln Forming Glass an in-depth guide to kiln processes for glass. \n\n		\n	\n\n	\n		\n		\n			\n\n	\n\n		\n	\n\n	\n		\n		\n			\n		\n	\n\n	\n		\n			Joanna Watson makes jewellery and gifts for the home in kiln fused glass. She trained in cookery and taught for many years as a Chef/Tutor at Demuth’s renowned Cookery School in Bath. Stained Glass was her first glassy love before she discovered fusing. She sells her work through galleries\, craft shops and art fairs. She now teaches at The Glass Hub\, Wiltshire.
